The Golden State Warriors sought Stephen Curry’s assistance in acquiring a second superstar during the summer but were unsuccessful. Marcus Thompson of The Athletic reported on August 30 that Curry actively pursued nine-time All-Star Paul George, who had previously played for the Los Angeles Clippers. However, George ended up signing with the Philadelphia 76ers for $212 million over the next four years. Thompson noted, “Curry recruited Paul George,” highlighting Curry’s understanding of the Warriors’ control and the impact of their rivals’ actions on their failed attempts. The Warriors also lost Klay Thompson to the Dallas Mavericks and were unable to complete a sign-and-trade for George or secure a trade for Lauri Markkanen, who chose to extend his stay with the Utah Jazz.
Despite these setbacks, Golden State had a strong offseason, acquiring De’Anthony Melton, Buddy Hield, and Kyle Anderson. Although these additions address key needs such as perimeter defense (Melton and Anderson), three-point shooting (Hield and Melton), and ball-handling (Anderson and Melton), all three players are currently listed as second-string on the depth chart. On August 30, Stephen A. Smith of ESPN criticized head coach Steve Kerr on “First Take,” questioning whether top NBA players are reluctant to join his team or if there is a lack of interest in teaming up with Curry. Smith asked, “Why couldn’t they get Paul George? Why can’t they get another superstar to pair with Steph Curry, especially after Kevin Durant’s departure?” The Warriors, like with other star free agents and trade targets, were unable to land George. Consequently, George will bring his impressive stats—22.6 points, 5.2 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 1.5 steals per game—to Philadelphia for the 2024 season and beyond, while the Warriors continue to seek solutions as Curry’s prime years continue.
