Phillies Injury Updates: Good And Bad News

Alec Bohm

Alec Bohm (pain in left hand)
Status: Not in the starting lineup

Bohm was removed from the August 29 game against the Braves due to what the Phillies described as “left hand discomfort.” He experienced pain after fouling off a pitch during a first-inning at-bat against Charlie Morton. Initially, manager Rob Thomson was concerned that Bohm might have suffered a hamate injury, but fortunately, the worst-case scenario seems to have been avoided. “The X-rays showed no structural damage,” Thomson said. “We got a break.”

According to MLB.com, Thomson has indicated that Bohm, who has now missed four consecutive games, will not be placed on the 10-day IL. However, it’s unlikely that he will play on Wednesday against the Toronto Blue Jays either. The Phillies appear to have decided that it’s better to play a man down while Bohm recovers rather than be without him for another week, as the IL allows a maximum of three days for backdating. Philadelphia Phillies 2024 Season Preview | Just Baseball

Spencer Turnbull (right lat strain)

Status: 60-day injured list
Turnbull is currently throwing up to 120 feet this week. On August 28, Thomson mentioned that if Turnbull does return this season, it will be as a reliever since there isn’t enough time left for him to build up to starting. Turnbull is set to throw a bullpen session this week. The Phillies remain hopeful but non-committal about whether the right-hander will be able to return this season. Andrew Painter (Surgeon Tommy John)

Status: Minor League 60-day injured list
The Phillies’ No. 1 overall prospect underwent Tommy John surgery on July 25, 2023. Painter was scheduled for an “up-down” session on September 1, with Thomson noting that “he’s doing pretty well.” The results of that session will determine the next steps in his recovery. Luis Ortiz (Tommy John surgery)
Status: 15-day injured list
Ortiz underwent successful Tommy John surgery on July 11. (Updated by Destiny Lugardo on July 12)
