The Boston Red Sox took a chance on Quinn Priester’s potential when they acquired him from the Pittsburgh Pirates at the trade deadline.
On Wednesday night, Priester showcased that potential with a standout performance for Triple-A Worcester. The 23-year-old right-hander delivered his best outing since joining the Red Sox organization, pitching six scoreless innings against the Rochester Red Wings. He allowed just four hits, issued no walks, and struck out eight batters, while throwing 47 of his 69 pitches for strikes before leaving the game.
Priester’s time with Worcester has been inconsistent; he allowed eight runs in his debut but also had a strong five-inning, scoreless performance in mid-August. Overall, he holds a 6.23 ERA with 26 strikeouts in 26 innings over six starts.
If Priester continues to improve, he might make a case for a late-season call-up, especially if the Red Sox fall out of playoff contention. He has previous big-league experience, having made 20 appearances (14 starts) with the Pirates over the past two seasons.
