After a lengthy and unusual process, the Toronto Maple Leafs officially announced on Tuesday that they have signed forward Nick Robertson to a one-year contract. The deal includes a cap hit of $875,000 for the 2024-25 season.

Nick Robertson, a restricted free agent following the conclusion of his entry-level contract with an average annual value (AAV) of $796,667 over the past three seasons, has finally reached a new agreement with the Toronto Maple Leafs. The long stalemate between Robertson and the team that drafted him 53rd overall in the second round of the 2019 NHL Draft is now over. There were reports that the 22-year-old had expressed a desire to leave the Leafs and seek opportunities elsewhere.

This situation was puzzling, especially since Robertson had just completed a breakout 2023-24 season, playing more NHL games than in any previous year. In 56 games, he set career highs with 14 goals, 13 assists, and 27 points. He also played in six of Toronto’s seven first-round Stanley Cup Playoff games against the Boston Bruins.

With Robertson remaining in Toronto, he’ll have a chance to further his progress this season. According to TSN’s Darren Dreger, new head coach Craig Berube had offseason discussions with Robertson, assuring him that there’s a role for him on the left wing.

Over his four seasons in the NHL, which included significant time with the Toronto Marlies (the Leafs’ AHL affiliate), Robertson has tallied 17 goals and 17 assists in 87 NHL games. In the AHL, he’s recorded 27 goals and 30 assists in 60 games.

With Robertson’s signing, the Maple Leafs now have 44 of the maximum 50 contracts for the 2024-25 season and about $1.5 million in cap space, per CapWages.
