Alec Bohm anticipates returning to the Philadelphia Phillies lineup soon, although he’s still experiencing some pain.
The third baseman addressed the media on Monday, three days after the Phillies placed him on the injured list due to a left hand strain.
“I can tell it’s improving every day,” Bohm said, according to Scott Lauber of the Philadelphia Inquirer. “It’s just about overcoming the last hurdle. We can protect it and adjust my swing, but that won’t be enough. At this point in the season, we’d rather take a few extra days to ensure it heals properly than try to manage it with a temporary fix and risk it affecting me the entire year.”
Lauber also reported that Bohm mentioned on Friday that swinging a bat felt like being hit with a hammer, so this update is a positive sign for Phillies fans.
Bohm hasn’t played since August 29. Although the Phillies hoped a few days off would resolve the issue and avoid an IL stint, his recovery was slower than expected. Initial x-rays were clean, and the team continued to play with him on the roster until his recovery hit a standstill.
Bohm will be eligible to return from the IL this Friday, but Phillies manager Rob Thomson indicated that it’s likely to take longer.
Alec Bohm is progressing in his recovery
Thomson mentioned that Bohm planned to take ground balls, do dry swings, and participate in tee and toss drills on Monday. He also noted that Bohm needs to swing a bat without pain on consecutive days before the team will consider activating him.
“I’m not sure how long it’s going to take, but I’m not worried about him having enough time to be ready for the postseason,” Thomson said, according to Corey Seidman of NBC Sports.
The Phillies can afford to be patient with Bohm, given their comfortable seven-game lead in the National League East. With the team focused on securing the best possible postseason position, they are currently one game behind the Los Angeles Dodgers for the best record in baseball.
