We’ve all been eagerly anticipating Matt McMahon’s first commitment for the 2025 recruiting class. Over the summer, LSU seemed close to landing several top 100 prospects, consistently making it as a finalist, but never securing a commitment during that period.
LSU Basketball has now secured its first commitment of this recruiting cycle with Power Forward Matt Gilhool.
On3 ranks Gilhool as the 62nd best player in the class, the 15th best Power Forward, and the top player out of Pennsylvania. The Tigers successfully closed the deal this weekend when they hosted Gilhool for an official visit.
Before his visit to Baton Rouge, LSU appeared to be behind schools closer to Pennsylvania and larger programs that had offered him a scholarship. However, things quickly shifted when Gilhool scheduled his commitment date shortly after his visit.
This weekend’s success is promising for LSU Basketball as the team has a busy recruiting month ahead. While no recruits are visiting campus this weekend, top targets Mazi Mosley, Jalen Reece, and Kayden Edwards will be on campus soon, giving McMahon the chance to pitch them on joining forces with Gilhool.
The Scouting report on Matt Gilhool
The Pennsylvania native stands at 6 feet 10 inches and weighs 205 pounds, a figure the strength and conditioning staff will likely aim to increase before he plays his first game. As a left-hander, there’s a lot to like about Gilhool’s game and how it fits into the modern style of play. He can shoot from three-point range, is effective in the paint on both ends of the floor, and has shown some skill in handling the ball when needed.
