The Atlanta Braves placed right-handed starter Reynaldo López on the 15-day injured list on Wednesday due to inflammation in his throwing shoulder. This comes after López left his start against the Washington Nationals, where his velocity dropped significantly during his one inning of work.
In response, the Braves called up right-hander Daysbel Hernández from Triple-A. Additionally, the team added infielder Cavan Biggio to the active roster and sent infielder Luke Williams to Triple-A Gwinnett.
López, 30, has been a key contributor to the Braves’ rotation this season. In 24 starts, he’s posted an impressive 2.04 ERA (205 ERA+) with 137 strikeouts and 42 walks over 128 2/3 innings. His strong first-half performance earned him his first All-Star selection. However, this marks his second stint on the IL this season, having previously missed time in August with forearm inflammation.
Injuries have heavily impacted the Braves in 2024, contributing to their battle for a playoff spot. Ace Spencer Strider and reigning NL MVP Ronald Acuña Jr. are both out for the season, while Austin Riley and Ozzie Albies are also on the injured list with uncertain return dates.
As of Wednesday, the Braves hold a 79-66 record, sitting in second place in the NL East and tied with the New York Mets for the third and final wild-card spot in the National League.
