Kane Wommack considers Justin Jefferson one of Alabama’s three starting inside linebackers, but the Crimson Tide will be without him for the first half of Saturday’s game against Wisconsin.
Jefferson, a former junior college transfer, was flagged for targeting during Alabama’s 42-16 win over South Florida at Bryant-Denny Stadium. The call came after Jefferson’s hit on Bulls’ quarterback Byrum Brown, with fans arguing that he led with his shoulder, not the crown of his helmet. However, the officiating crew upheld the targeting call. As per NCAA rules, Jefferson will be required to sit out the first half of the upcoming game against the Badgers.

Jefferson, a former junior college transfer, was flagged for targeting during Alabama’s 42-16 win over South Florida at Bryant-Denny Stadium. Many Tide fans disagreed with the call, believing Jefferson led with his shoulder rather than the crown of his helmet when hitting Bulls’ quarterback Byrum Brown. However, the officials upheld the targeting call, and according to NCAA rules, Jefferson will miss the first half of the upcoming game against the Badgers.
Kalen DeBoer confirmed Jefferson’s suspension during Wednesday’s SEC Coaches Teleconference.
“I think every situation is unique,” DeBoer said. “It’s unfortunate because these guys are trying to play their best and are not intentionally looking to injure anyone. I know Justin felt that way. Unfortunately, he met the criteria for targeting as defined by the rules. It’s part of football to err on the side of safety. The rules are continually reviewed, and while adjustments may be made, it’s about finding the best approach for all situations.”
With Jefferson out, Jeremiah Alexander or Justin Okoronkwo will have the chance to step up and take significant reps in the first half against the Badgers, who will face off at 11:00 a.m. CT this weekend.
