Virginia Tech quarterback Kyron Drones delivered a standout performance Saturday night in a 37-17 victory over Old Dominion. The Baylor transfer showcased his dual-threat abilities, rushing for a team-high 117 yards and passing for 176 yards with a touchdown. It was the type of game Hokies fans had been waiting to see from him in 2024.
Drones made an impact with both his arm and legs, capping off a second-quarter drive with a 1-yard touchdown on a Tush Push. After halftime, with star running back Bhayshul Tuten sidelined briefly, Drones kept the offense rolling. Once Tuten returned, offensive coordinator Tyler Bowen kept both players heavily involved.
In the third quarter, Drones had a highlight moment, breaking free for a 53-yard run deep into Old Dominion territory. As he reached the secondary, he lowered his shoulder and bulldozed through two defenders before stepping out of bounds.
After the game, Drones was asked about that powerful run where he plowed through the Monarchs’ cornerbacks, further showcasing his physicality and athleticism.
Virginia Tech QB Kyron Drones sends message to future cornerbacks
After the game, Kyron Drones reflected on his dominant run, where two Old Dominion cornerbacks attempted to tackle him high and quickly learned it wasn’t a successful strategy.

“I ain’t really worried about a corner coming to tackle me. If they try to tackle me high, then that’s on him,” Drones said confidently.
It’s clear he has no concerns about defenders trying to bring him down up high. At 6-foot-3 and 234 pounds, Drones is a powerful force on the field. His ability to break through tackles and gain yards after contact was already evident last season, and this game only reinforced it. As he showed against Old Dominion, trying to bring him down high is a mistake opponents will want to avoid, or they’ll find themselves getting trucked just like the Monarchs defenders.
