After the 2021 season, the Florida Gators made a surprising decision to fire head coach Dan Mullen and bring in Billy Napier as his replacement.
Mullen had led the Gators for four seasons, achieving winning records in his first three years and securing spots in three New Year’s Six Bowls. However, his fourth season was a disappointment, ending with a losing record. Despite this one down year, the decision to part ways with him was unexpected.
Critics argue it was a mistake to dismiss Mullen after just one poor season, as Florida now finds itself with Napier, who is facing scrutiny after losing the first two games against Power Four teams this season. Interestingly, when Mullen was let go, he reportedly had some influence over who would succeed him as head coach.
Dan Mullen Wanted Florida To Hire Another SEC Coach
Former Florida Gators head coach Dan Mullen recently appeared on the Zach Gelb Show, where they discussed the possibility of Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin moving to Florida if offered the position
Mullen revealed that after he was fired by Florida in 2021, he was asked for his recommendation on who should replace him. He advised the team to “hire Kiffin right now.”
Despite Mullen’s suggestion, Florida chose to go with Billy Napier, a decision some now regret as the program struggles. Mullen’s belief is that Kiffin would have been a great fit for Florida, and the program would be in a better position under his leadership.
As speculation grows about Kiffin’s future, there is a chance Florida may approach him this offseason. With Florida’s stronger program and potential to offer more NIL money than Ole Miss, Mullen’s advice to hire Kiffin could still come into play.
