Duffy has wasted no time making an impact on the recruiting trail, landing top-tier talent like Jenkins and Sears. Both players rank in the top 75, providing a strong foundation for Duffy’s vision of building a championship-caliber team at Virginia Tech.
Amani Jenkins
- Position: Power Forward
- School: Johnston (Iowa)
- National Rank: 69
- Commitment Date: June 23, 2024
Scouting Report (by Brandon Clay, 247Sports Director of Scouting for Women’s Basketball):
Amani Jenkins has had an impressive 12-month stretch, which included a commitment to Marquette before following coach Megan Duffy to Virginia Tech. Jenkins stands out for her ability and willingness to be effective around the rim, consistently finishing through contact in the paint. At the college level, she could further elevate her game by expanding her shooting range or becoming an elite option in pick-and-roll situations. Jenkins is also known for her winning mentality, having found success both in her school program and during the club season. Her effort and intensity make her an ideal addition to any winning roster.
Kate Sears
- Position: Point Guard
- School: Boone (N.C.) Watauga
- National Rank: 72
- Commitment Date: May 27, 2024
Why She Chose Virginia Tech:
“I chose Virginia Tech because when I visited, it felt right,” Sears shared with 247Sports. “I wanted to go somewhere unique, where not many from my town go, but also a place with a chance to win and a strong basketball fan base. Even though the staff is new, I know the other coaches are winners. I believe it won’t be long before we’re back in the Final Four, which was really important to me.”
She explained her decision further: “Many of the schools I considered, like Kansas, Purdue, and Michigan, were a flight away. It came down to distance and the people. I didn’t want to be far from my family but also wanted to be surrounded by great individuals. I built a solid relationship with Coach Duffy, and I’m confident the staff will help me excel both on and off the court.”
Sears added, “Coach Duffy recruited me the entire time. She was at Marquette, and now that she’s at Virginia Tech, I know she’s a proven winner. The resources and fan support at Virginia Tech played a big role in my decision. They have everything needed to succeed, and I trust she’ll get us back on track.”
On Her Role:
“They see me as a point guard but also as a shooting guard,” Sears noted. “I’m versatile and can play either position, which is important. I’ve primarily played on the ball, but I’m capable of playing off the ball and shooting as well. They utilize a lot of ball screens and allow freedom for guards to attack, which is appealing.”
“I’m determined to work hard and be the best player I can be, translating that into wins. I aim to win the conference and make a tournament run.”
Scouting Report (by Brandon Clay, 247Sports Director of Scouting for Women’s Basketball):
“Kate Sears brings versatility to the backcourt, providing Hokies coach Megan Duffy with options in her second season. A fierce competitor, Sears can play either guard spot in the ACC. As the league continues to grow more competitive, she may transition off the ball to enhance shot-making from beyond the arc. In high school, Sears has taken on various roles to ensure her team’s success, but in Blacksburg, she’ll be able to focus on being more efficient and impactful.”
