The Detroit Red Wings are aiming to break their playoff drought, and one trade proposal involves them landing one of the NHL’s top goaltenders.

A fan on PuckPedia’s PuckGM tool suggested a major trade, in which the Red Wings would acquire Jeremy Swayman from the Boston Bruins.

In the proposed trade, the Detroit Red Wings would receive Jeremy Swayman, while the Boston Bruins would acquire:

The proposed trade would be a blockbuster move, with Detroit going all-in to acquire one of the league’s top goalies, Jeremy Swayman, who remains without a contract. In exchange, the Boston Bruins would receive a package that includes a top goalie prospect, a current NHL goalie, several players, and a first-round pick.

Swayman has been a restricted free agent (RFA) since July 1 but has yet to sign a contract extension. In this proposed deal, the Red Wings would sign him to a seven-year contract worth $8 million per year. Last season, Swayman posted a 25-10-8 record with a 2.53 goals-against average (GAA) and a .916 save percentage (SV%).

The key pieces for Boston in this trade would be the first-round pick and Sebastian Cossa. Cossa, selected 15th overall in the 2021 NHL Draft, is considered one of the NHL’s top goalie prospects. While he could see NHL action this season, he’s more likely to become a full-time NHL goalie next year.

Swayman’s Agent Fires Back at Bruins Offer

Boston’s front office held a press conference on September 30, ahead of the 2024-25 NHL season, where Bruins president Cam Neely stated that Jeremy Swayman had turned down a $64 million contract extension. However, Swayman’s agent, Lewis Gross, responded on social media, disputing that such an offer was ever made.

“Normally, I don’t release statements or discuss negotiations through the media. However, in this case, I feel I need to defend my client,” Gross said. “At today’s press conference, $64 million was mentioned. This was the first time that number was ever discussed in our negotiations. Prior to the press conference, no offer of that amount was made. We are extremely disappointed. This was not fair to Jeremy. We will take a few days to decide our next steps.”

Swayman, originally drafted in the fourth round of the 2011 NHL Draft, remains in contract negotiations with the Bruins.

Red Wings GM Doesn’t Expect Team to Use 3 Goalies

Detroit signed Cam Talbot in free agency and already has Ville Husso and Sebastian Cossa, both of whom could make the NHL roster this season. However, Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman stated his preference for keeping just two goalies on the NHL roster for the 2024-25 season.

“I don’t see us carrying three goaltenders throughout the season,” Yzerman said. “That wasn’t really the plan last year either, but injuries dictated that. At the end of the season, we debated what to do, and then Ville [Husso] got hurt, which settled the issue.”

The Red Wings are set to open their 2024-25 NHL season at home on October 10 against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
