The Pittsburgh Steelers have exceeded expectations this season, starting with an impressive 3-1 record. One of the biggest surprises is that they’ve managed this success without the quarterback they initially signed to be their starter, Russell Wilson.
During the offseason, the Steelers made a significant change at quarterback, deciding to move on from Kenny Pickett. They brought in nine-time Pro Bowler Russell Wilson after his release from the Denver Broncos and also traded for Justin Fields from the Chicago Bears.
Most anticipated Wilson would be the starter, but a calf injury has kept him sidelined. In his absence, Fields has stepped up and led the team to early success, proving to be a key contributor under center for the Steelers.
The Pittsburgh Steelers Missed Out on Brandon Aiyuk
Many fans are aware that the Pittsburgh Steelers were heavily linked to San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk throughout the offseason. In February, Aiyuk expressed his desire for a new contract, leading to challenging negotiations and ongoing trade rumors.
Aiyuk even mentioned the Steelers as a potential destination for him in 2024 if he couldn’t secure an extension with the 49ers. When he formally requested a trade during training camp, the Steelers responded with a competitive offer for San Francisco along with a contract extension for Aiyuk.
However, in a surprising turn of events, the disgruntled wide receiver opted to sign an extension with the 49ers at the last moment, leaving the Steelers without a deal they had hoped for.
The Pittsburgh Steelers Are Making an Aggressive Push to Acquire Davante Adams in a Trade with the Las Vegas Raiders
Given the Steelers’ active interest in acquiring a premier wide receiver, it’s no surprise that they are pursuing trade options. Recently, three-time All-Pro Davante Adams expressed his desire to be traded from the Las Vegas Raiders rather than finish the season with the team.
Several franchises are eyeing Adams, including the New York Jets, who have his former Green Bay Packers quarterback, Aaron Rodgers, leading their offense.
However, Dianna Russini from The Athletic reported that the Steelers are making a significant effort to land the six-time Pro Bowler. She stated, “The Pittsburgh Steelers, who were previously interested in trading for Brandon Aiyuk before he signed his extension with San Francisco, are now in communication with the Raiders’ front office. Pittsburgh is making an aggressive offer.”
Reports indicate that the Raiders are seeking a second-round draft pick along with additional compensation in exchange for Adams. While the specifics of the Steelers’ offer remain undisclosed, it’s likely that the second-round pick is part of the proposal.
When the Raiders initially acquired Adams, they sent a first-round and second-round pick to the Green Bay Packers. Although they may not receive a first-round pick in return this time, they could potentially secure additional late-round picks or even a player as part of the deal.
