Pittsburgh Steelers’ star safety Minkah Fitzpatrick has proposed a straight forward solution to address the team’s recent defensive struggles. After back-to-back losses to the Indianapolis Colts and Dallas Cowboys, where communication breakdowns in the secondary led to big plays and over 100 yards allowed on busted coverages, Fitzpatrick suggested simplifying the defensive scheme.
“We need to play simple defense,” Fitzpatrick said. “We have a lot of talent in the secondary… we just have to simplify the play calls so we can play fast.”
The Steelers, who started the season 3-0, now face a crucial game against the Las Vegas Raiders, hoping Fitzpatrick’s approach can help tighten up a defense missing key edge rushers like Alex Highsmith, DeMarvin Leal, and Nick Herbig due to injuries. While his solution may seem easy to implement, the Steelers must weigh whether simplifying their scheme will make them too predictable for opposing offenses.
