BREAKING: Bill Belichick shares blunt take on Raiders-Davante Adams situation

As tensions between the Las Vegas Raiders and star wide receiver Davante Adams continue to escalate, it feels like everyone in the NFL world—whether pundits, former players, or media favorites like Bill Belichick—has weighed in on the potential breakup.
During a discussion on Underdog Sports, Belichick expressed skepticism about the Raiders getting the “second-round pick and more” they’re reportedly asking for in a trade. His reasoning? A second-round pick is too steep a price for an older player with a hefty contract.
“Not for a second-round pick, which is supposedly what they’re asking,” Belichick said. “I don’t see anyone giving up a second-rounder for him. You’d have to believe Adams will take your team to the next level this year, considering his big salary.”

Although calling Adams “old” seems strange—he’s only 31 despite his 11 NFL seasons—Belichick still attributes the Raiders’ predicament to their own lack of foresight, suggesting it could have been avoided.

Bill Belichick believes the Raiders set themselves up for failure

Could the Raiders still trade Adams before the deadline? It seems highly likely, but Belichick believes the Raiders should have assessed the situation more effectively during the offseason. If they recognized that the team’s potential was limited and that Adams might want a trade, they should have acted decisively when they had more negotiating power.

“Yeah, it’s a tough situation. That’s why, when you see a storm brewing, it’s best to address it sooner rather than later,” Belichick commented. “The Raiders find themselves in a difficult position now, and they’ve somewhat brought this upon themselves. This situation has been developing for a while, and the longer they wait, the harder it becomes to reach a resolution.”

After missing out on a top quarterback in both free agency and the draft, very few outside the most die-hard Raiders fans believed Las Vegas had a realistic shot at the postseason in 2024. While it may not have been a popular idea at the time, trading Adams a few weeks ago might have provided the team with the valuable picks they’re seeking, especially after Brandon Aiyuk was traded. Now, they are at the mercy of a market that has cooled off as the weather changes.
