Virginia Tech has announced the appointment of its newest Community Services Officer, a critical role focused on enhancing campus safety and fostering relationships between the university and the surrounding community. The new officer, John “J.D.” Reynolds, brings over a decade of experience in law enforcement and community outreach, promising to build on the legacy of positive engagement and student support at Virginia Tech.
Reynolds, a graduate of the University of Richmond, has served in various public safety roles throughout Virginia, including positions as a patrol officer and community engagement liaison. His previous work focused on bridging the gap between law enforcement and local neighborhoods, making him a standout candidate in Virginia Tech’s search for an individual who could continue cultivating a safe, inclusive campus atmosphere.
“John’s experience and dedication to public service make him an exceptional fit for this position,” said Tony Price, Director of Public Safety at Virginia Tech. “His background in community-oriented policing aligns perfectly with the values of our university, and we are excited to see how he enhances our efforts in creating a safe and welcoming environment.”
In his new role, Reynolds will be tasked with implementing programs that strengthen relationships between students, faculty, and the broader Blacksburg community. One of his main initiatives will be expanding the university’s existing community outreach efforts, such as safety workshops, volunteer opportunities, and educational programs about personal safety and emergency preparedness.
“I am honored to take on this role at Virginia Tech,” Reynolds said in a statement. “As someone who is deeply committed to building trust and collaboration between communities and public safety officers, I look forward to working with the students, faculty, and staff to ensure that Virginia Tech remains a place where everyone feels safe and supported.”
Reynolds’ appointment comes at a pivotal time for the university, as campuses nationwide are placing increasing emphasis on safety, well-being, and inclusivity. The new Community Services Officer role at Virginia Tech is seen as a step toward more proactive engagement with the student body, focusing on crime prevention and community-building rather than simply enforcement.
One of the key programs Reynolds will oversee is the “Hokie Community Connect” initiative, which pairs students with local businesses, non-profits, and community leaders for volunteer opportunities. He will also be responsible for fostering dialogue between law enforcement and underrepresented groups on campus to ensure that all voices are heard and considered in public safety decisions.
“Virginia Tech has always been a leader in community service and engagement,” said President Tim Sands. “With John on board, we are confident that he will strengthen the ties between the university and the Blacksburg community, helping us to remain at the forefront of fostering a safe and inclusive environment for everyone.”
Reynolds is expected to assume his new responsibilities immediately, with plans to host a series of open forums and meet-and-greet events with students and staff to better understand the community’s needs and concerns. His office will be located in the Public Safety Building, where students and community members are encouraged to drop in with questions, suggestions, or concerns.
As Virginia Tech continues to grow and evolve, Reynolds’ appointment represents the university’s ongoing commitment to the safety and well-being of its students, faculty, and staff while strengthening its role within the greater Blacksburg community.
