The Braves announced today that two of their players are candidates for a significant award in 2024.
Matt Olson is a finalist for the 2024 National League Gold Glove Award. In the tweet, he is shown receiving a pick-off throw, highlighting his strong fielding performance this year based on traditional metrics. He boasts a .996 fielding percentage and played all 162 games. The latest SABR Defensive Index rankings place him third among all qualified first basemen, behind Christian Walker and Michael Busch. Additionally, according to Baseball Savant, Olson recorded 4 outs above average, which puts him in the 86th percentile.

Chris Sale has also been named a Gold Glove Finalist. He had an outstanding season on the mound, recording more innings pitched than in any season since 2017, finishing with a 2.38/2.09/2.64 ERA and a 6.4 WAR. Sale handled all 31 opportunities flawlessly, resulting in a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage. He currently ranks fifth in the latest SABR rankings. I’m not sure how to evaluate these races, as the SABR team won’t release their latest data until after the award is announced. However, it’s certainly exciting to see Braves players in contention for the Gold Glove this fall.
