Igor Shesterkin Unexpected Decision: ‘Nobody Would Disagree’

Contract negotiations between Igor Shesterkin and the New York Rangers remain at a standstill, with new details emerging about what could happen next. The situation gained attention when ESPN’s Kevin Weekes reported that Shesterkin turned down an $88 million, eight-year offer from the Rangers. Before this, Shesterkin had reportedly set an October 9 deadline for an agreement, but a recent update suggests the former Vezina Trophy winner may still be open to negotiating during the season—if the offer reflects his true worth.

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported on October 12 that Shesterkin is willing to sign an extension mid-season, provided the deal meets his expectations. Friedman explained, “If the Rangers get to a number that he likes, they can still get it done in-season. I’ve heard many times that Shesterkin is considered the Rangers’ best and most important player, and I don’t think anyone would argue that.”

Igor Shesterkin Rejects Massive Offer From New York Rangers

Although Shesterkin’s rejection of the $88 million deal would have made him the highest-paid goalie in NHL history, surpassing Carey Price’s $84 million contract, his goal appears to be becoming the highest-paid player on the Rangers’ roster. This would mean surpassing Artemi Panarin’s $11.6 million-per-season salary. According to Friedman, Shesterkin’s camp is likely aiming for a salary around $12.58 million per year, which would align with Panarin’s percentage of the salary cap.

Friedman noted that the Rangers are open to making Shesterkin the highest-paid goalie in the league. “The Rangers have clearly indicated that he will be the highest-paid goalie in the NHL,” Friedman said. However, it’s unclear whether the team is willing to pay Shesterkin more than Panarin, their superstar forward.
