Georgia quarterback Carson Beck had a challenging outing against Texas on Saturday, though it ultimately didn’t affect the team’s success, as the Bulldogs secured a 30-15 victory. Still, Beck needs to improve his performance moving forward.
Fans expressed their dissatisfaction with his play, and Beck himself admitted in the postgame press conference that he must do better.
Media members also questioned head coach Kirby Smart about Beck’s performance. However, instead of criticizing his quarterback, Smart came to Beck’s defense.
“I don’t agree with that,” Smart said, as reported by ugawire.usatoday.com, when asked if Georgia won despite a poor performance from Beck. “He had probably eight or nine drops, and that’s tough on a quarterback. Psychologically, when you start a game with drops, it can affect you.”
“I’m not saying he played perfectly, but I saw a third-and-four scramble where he put his body on the line and made an incredible play. I think he played pretty well. But everyone will look at stats and other things, and they’ll have their opinions, while we’ll keep playing with Carson Beck.”
Smart makes a valid point about how fans and media often focus too much on statistics rather than the actual game. The receivers’ drops are not Beck’s fault, yet they negatively impact his stats. Additionally, the third-and-four scramble Smart highlighted shows up as just a couple of rushing yards in the box score, overlooking its significance in the game’s outcome.
Smart did acknowledge that Beck needs to elevate his game, indicating he isn’t ignoring the issues, including the three interceptions. However, if Smart isn’t worried about Beck’s future performance, the fanbase may not need to be concerned either.
