GOOD NEWS: 2 Tech Highly Talented Stars Land All-ACC Honors

Aside from a shaky third quarter last Thursday night at Lane Stadium, the Virginia Tech football team kicked off the second half of their 2024 season with a commanding 42-21 victory over Boston College. The Hokies’ defense set the tone early, while the offense scored on four of their five first-half drives. The only exception was when Kyron Drones fumbled deep in Eagles territory.

It was a record-setting night for running back Bhayshul Tuten, and for the second straight year, Virginia Tech posted 40-plus points on Boston College, this time at home in Blacksburg. The defense stepped up in the fourth quarter to prevent any chance of an Eagles comeback, avoiding a potentially devastating home loss. Two Hokies were named to Pro Football Focus’ Conference Player of the Week team.

The first player to earn this honor was offensive lineman Xavier Chaplin, who has consistently been one of Virginia Tech’s top performers at left tackle. He played a crucial role in creating openings for Tuten’s impressive runs.

Speaking of Tuten, he was unsurprisingly named the ACC Running Back of the Week. He set a new Virginia Tech single-game rushing record with 266 yards and scored four total touchdowns—three on the ground and one receiving. His night included an electrifying 83-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, followed by two more in the third quarter, including a tough 6-yard effort where he powered through defenders to reach the end zone.

In the second quarter, the Hokies executed a nearly flawless drive to close out the half, capped by a 20-yard touchdown pass from Kyron Drones to Tuten, who made an impressive adjustment near the goal line. With several NFL scouts present, Tuten’s stock likely rose after this standout performance, highlighting the potential of the North Carolina A&T transfer.
