Jose Barrero’s tenure with the Cincinnati Reds was marked by underwhelming performance, as the former top prospect never lived up to expectations. After failing to make the Reds’ Opening Day roster this spring, Barrero was cut from the team.
He was designated for assignment but picked up off waivers by the Texas Rangers. Despite hopes of a fresh start, Barrero didn’t make the Rangers’ roster and instead accepted an outright assignment to Triple-A Round Rock to begin the season.
In 49 games with the Rangers’ minor-league affiliate, Barrero’s season took a tragic turn when a collision in the outfield on July 4th left him in serious pain. Playing center field for the Round Rock Express, Barrero collided with a teammate and had to leave the game. He was placed on the 60-day injured list and missed the remainder of the 2024 season.
Former Reds prospect Jose Barrero returns to Dominican Winter League
Jose Barrero remains with the Texas Rangers organization and is aiming for a resurgence this winter by playing for the Estrellas Orientales in the Dominican Winter League. Assigned to play during the offseason, Barrero will need a strong performance to reignite his chances of returning to the major leagues in 2025.
Once considered one of the Cincinnati Reds’ top prospects, Barrero was highly regarded heading into 2021, with expectations similar to those now surrounding Elly De La Cruz. Barrero possessed the physical tools to become an elite defender, along with speed and power. Unfortunately, he was never able to fully realize his potential.
In his time with the Reds, Barrero struggled, posting a .186/.242/.255 slash line with four home runs and 32 RBIs. His tendency to chase pitches far outside the strike zone led to frustration among the Reds coaching staff. In a bid to keep him in the organization, the Reds even transitioned him to center field, but the move didn’t yield the desired results.
Barrero, like many talented young players, has struggled to put everything together. However, a successful stint in the Dominican Winter League could help him regain his confidence and earn another shot at the majors in 2025.
