Hugh Freeze is fully aware of the increasing chatter surrounding his potential firing as Auburn’s football coach and seems to be trying to buy himself some time amid the team’s struggles. Currently on a four-game losing streak, which continued with a 21-17 defeat to Missouri, Freeze has been offering explanations for the team’s poor performance.
“I’ve only had one regular-season losing record, and it feels like every winnable game hasn’t gone our way,” Freeze said, as noted by Logan Fowler. “Not a single one. And, you know, obviously. I hate the result for the players, our incredible fans, administration, and you guys that cover us. I hate it. It makes you sick.”
But this isn’t the only point Freeze is making as he defends his position during this rough stretch for Auburn football.
Hugh Freeze on why Auburn football loses
One thing Hugh Freeze knows well is how to lift spirits after yet another loss. His motivational words stirred up conversation again this week.
“I do think we still play not to lose instead of, man, let’s play to win,” Freeze said during his Monday press conference (h/t 247 Sports). “Truthfully, we probably are coaching that way some, too. I feel the pressure of those calls, of not being free to do what I’ve done for years and thinking, oh man, we could screw this up or we could not execute this correctly.”
While Freeze continues to project optimism, Auburn’s performance has not improved, and the losses keep stacking up. A single bad season might be forgivable, but the real question is how long Tiger fans will continue to support the program with full enthusiasm. If that support wanes, the timeline for change might speed up dramatically.
