David Fry had a standout season for the Cleveland Guardians, earning an All-Star nod, delivering clutch postseason home runs, and experiencing a deep playoff run. However, his season was recently hampered by a persistent elbow injury.
Fry is scheduled to meet with Dr. Keith Meister next week to assess whether surgery is necessary, with reports indicating it is the likely outcome.
AP’s Tom Withers posted on X, “Couldn’t get to everything yesterday on Guardians, of note: David Fry likely to have surgery on right elbow, meeting with Dr. next week. Could be some changes with coaching staff, unclear if Carl Willis will be back with pitchers. Mutual interest with Austin Hedges.”
If Fry undergoes surgery, potentially Tommy John, it could significantly impact the Guardians’ 2025 plans. He may miss part of the season and, like Bryce Harper last year, be limited to a designated hitter role upon return.
Should Fry become primarily a DH, the Guardians might consider trading Josh Naylor to clear room, allowing Kyle Manzardo to play first base regularly. However, this is speculative for now, and everything hinges on Fry’s surgery decision.
