As October wraps up, college football teams are beginning to position themselves for a chance at the newly expanded 12-team College Football Playoff. This season’s format brings fresh opportunities, with several non-power conference teams contending for the coveted 12th seed. While multiple teams remain in the race for that final playoff spot, one can already be ruled out, due in part to the actions of a former Virginia Tech wide receiver.
Former Virginia Tech WR Christian Moss is part of historic upset
Kennesaw State University turned a challenging season around in dramatic fashion Wednesday night, capturing their first-ever FBS win with a 27-24 upset over the previously undefeated Liberty Flames. Entering the game at 0-6, the Owls were widely expected to fall to Liberty, but former Virginia Tech wide receiver Christian Moss and his teammates had other plans. Moss sparked the offense early, hauling in a 41-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter and finishing with 56 receiving yards on two catches. The 6’3″, 190-pound Georgia native has made 10 catches for 125 yards this season after transferring from Virginia Tech, where he played in 2022.
The loss to Kennesaw State snapped Liberty’s 17-game winning streak, which had been the longest active streak in the country. This surprising result shakes up the race for a College Football Playoff spot, particularly benefiting teams like Boise State and UNLV from the Mountain West Conference. Liberty had narrowly escaped an earlier scare against New Mexico State in September, winning 30-24, but this time they couldn’t avoid an upset, marking a historic night for Kennesaw State in Georgia.
