Florida Gators athletic director Scott Stricklin has officially confirmed his support for head coach Billy Napier, addressing the swirling rumors of his possible firing. Napier’s position has been under scrutiny since Florida’s season-opening 41-17 loss to Miami. Now, with the Gators holding a 4-4 overall record and a 2-3 standing in SEC play, the season has been a challenging one. However, Stricklin has decided to retain Napier for a third year, demonstrating faith in his long-term vision for the program.
“I wanted to let you know that Billy Napier will continue to as head football coach of the Florida Gators,” Stricklin stated.
Billy Napier has been leading the Florida Gators since 2022, finishing his first season with a 6-7 record, followed by a 5-7 finish in 2023, and now standing at 4-4 in 2024. Athletic director Scott Stricklin expressed confidence in Napier, saying, “I am confident that Billy will meet the challenges and opportunities ahead. We will work alongside him to support any changes needed to elevate Gator football. As college athletics evolves, UF is committed to embracing innovation and strategy, ensuring the Gators thrive in today’s competitive landscape.”
As the Gators aim to secure bowl eligibility, they face a challenging schedule with upcoming games against No. 5 Texas, No. 15 LSU, and No. 16 Ole Miss. Stricklin’s decision to retain Napier likely reflects a commitment to stability, especially since Florida has cycled through four head coaches—Will Muschamp, Jim McElwain, Dan Mullen, and Napier—since Urban Meyer’s departure in 2010. Napier’s substantial buyout, estimated at $26.7 million, may have also influenced the decision.
