The New York Giants are set to start local talent Tommy DeVito as quarterback for their game on Sunday, November 24, against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. This decision follows the benching of franchise quarterback Daniel Jones, with the team opting for DeVito over backup Drew Lock as their second option.
Giants players have begun sharing their thoughts on the quarterback switch, and DeVito himself has spoken about stepping into Jones’ role.
New York Giants Players Welcome Tommy DeVito
When media entered the Giants’ locker room on Wednesday, November 20, players enthusiastically shouted “Tommy Cutlets” in support of quarterback Tommy DeVito. The moment, captured by media personality Madelyn Burke, was shared on X formerly Twitter.
Speaking about his relationship with benched quarterback Daniel Jones, DeVito expressed gratitude, saying:
“He’s been a very close teammate to me, especially last year when he took me under his wing and continues to do so. Even today in meetings, he’s helping me with details, correcting things, and offering support in any way he can.”
When asked about his message to the team ahead of the game against the Buccaneers, DeVito responded:
“Same as last year—I’m giving everything I have on the field. My heart and soul are in it, from preparation to game day, which I enjoy most.”
While there was excitement about DeVito stepping into the starting role, some players also acknowledged Jones’ situation.
Wide receiver Darius Slayton shared:
“First and foremost, he’s a friend. You don’t want anyone in the predicament he’s in. I’ll support him however I can.”
Defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux commented:
“That’s the nature of the beast. At 2-8, everything is up for grabs.”
Linebacker Bobby Okereke added:
“You rally around your teammates. It’s a tough situation, but we all take pride in this business. We move forward, and we’ve got a great opportunity this week.”
DeVito, no stranger to the starting role, started six games for the Giants in 2023, finishing with a 3-3 record.
Giants HC Brian Daboll Talks Tommy DeVito
New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll announced on Monday, November 18, that Tommy DeVito would start at quarterback in the upcoming game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Daboll shared that he informed all three quarterbacks of the decision that morning.
“I spoke with all the quarterbacks this morning before our meeting and let them know the direction we’re going,” Daboll said. “Those are never easy conversations. I have a lot of respect for all three of those guys.”
Explaining the decision, Daboll added:
“After evaluating a lot of factors and reviewing tape, we felt Tommy was the best choice. Last year, he gave us a spark, and that played a big role in this decision. Drew will serve as the backup, and we’ll continue working with him. Both Drew and Daniel have handled this like professionals. It’s never easy to have these talks, but we felt this was a necessary move. We’re excited to get Tommy ready for Tampa.”
