New York Rangers GM Chris Drury is taking steps to address his team’s struggles after issuing a league-wide memo signaling his openness to trading key players, including Jacob Trouba and Chris Kreider. The memo, which aimed to spark urgency, drew widespread attention across the NHL and within the Rangers’ locker room. However, it seemed to have an unintended effect, as the team delivered a poor performance in a 5-2 loss to the St. Louis Blues.
According to The Athletic, Drury sent the memo on Sunday in an attempt to motivate his players, but it was met with criticism. Many felt it undermined the team, belittled captain Jacob Trouba, and created unnecessary tension, especially given the Rangers’ solid record and the slim likelihood of such trades materializing.
Arthur Staple reported that Drury followed up with meetings involving Trouba, Kreider, and other veteran players. A team source described these discussions as “honest, productive conversations” intended to rebuild trust and address concerns without walking back the trade threat. Drury’s primary aim appeared to be stabilizing the locker room and preventing further division amid swirling trade rumors.
Trouba Didn’t Seek a Meeting with the GM, Not Phased by Trade Rumors
“I’m happy to be here. I’m focused on playing hockey,” Rangers captain Jacob Trouba said during an optional practice on Tuesday, sidestepping questions about the trade memo. Trouba noted that he’s used to handling such speculation, referencing similar trade rumors he faced over the summer.
In his article, Arthur Staple suggests that while public statements deny any internal discord, GM Chris Drury’s recent actions appear to be aimed at damage control. Drury likely understands the significant challenges of trading key players like Trouba or Chris Kreider midseason. Both have substantial contracts and critical leadership roles, and their departures would leave major gaps in the Rangers’ lineup. Additionally, any acquiring team would need to carefully consider what assets they’d part with in return.
As the Rangers prepare for their matchup against the Carolina Hurricanes on Wednesday, Drury’s timing seems intended to prevent further division within the locker room. The team’s lackluster performance in their first game after the trade rumors—along with the widespread discussion it sparked—has proven to be a distraction. For now, the focus appears to be on rebuilding trust and maintaining unity, though achieving this may prove challenging. The Rangers cannot afford to let internal turmoil further jeopardize their standings.
