New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll announced Wednesday that veteran quarterback Drew Lock will start against the New Orleans Saints in Week 14.
Daboll had previously declined to clarify the quarterback situation following the Giants’ Thanksgiving loss to the Dallas Cowboys, stating last Friday that he wasn’t ready to name a starter. However, despite a majority of fans in a recent poll favoring Tommy DeVito as the starter, Daboll opted to go with Lock.
Lock’s performance against the Cowboys was far from stellar, as he recorded two turnovers and struggled with miscommunication with his receivers. However, some of the blame wasn’t entirely on him. His pick-six came from a remarkable play by DeMarvion Overshown, and his lack of chemistry with the receivers could be attributed to having only a single walkthrough as the starter before the game. This week, Lock will have more practice reps to build timing with his receivers, giving the Giants a chance to avoid remaining winless at home.
Although DeVito is still recovering from a forearm injury, Lock’s experience, arm strength, and athleticism give the Giants a potentially better shot at success against the Saints—a team that, despite the Giants’ injuries and struggles, remains beatable.
While there are still significant questions across the Giants’ roster, at least the starting quarterback situation is settled for now. Whether Lock retains the role beyond this week remains to be seen.
