BREAKING: Yankees ‘not in’ on Cardinals elite defensive infielder

After months of speculation about the Yankees’ possible pursuit of Nolan Arenado, Jack Curry of the YES Network revealed that the team is “not in” on the eight-time All-Star. This update follows weeks of trade rumors connecting the Yankees to the St. Louis Cardinals’ standout third baseman.

Arenado’s 2024 Performance

Nolan Arenado remains among Major League Baseball’s elite third basemen, despite a dip in performance during the 2024 season. The 33-year-old posted a .266/.321/.294 slash line with 16 home runs, 71 RBIs, and a 102 wRC+, which, while solid, represents a decline from his previous standards.

On defense, however, Arenado remained exceptional, recording six defensive runs saved and nine outs above average, further solidifying his status as one of the league’s premier defensive third basemen.

A Complicated Fit for the Yankees

Arenado’s defensive excellence would significantly bolster the Yankees’ infield, particularly at third base, where his dependability would be a major asset.

Offensively, his bat could add some power and consistent production to a lineup that struggled with reliability in its lower half last season. However, Arenado’s offensive output might take a further hit at Yankee Stadium, as his tendency to pull the ball to right field doesn’t align well with the ballpark’s dimensions.

Contract Challenges and No-Trade Clause

Arenado is under contract for three more years, carrying a $25.5 million annual luxury tax salary—reduced to $21.1 million when factoring in the Rockies’ financial contribution. For a team already near the top luxury tax thresholds, taking on Arenado’s deal would demand considerable financial adjustments.

Furthermore, Arenado has a full no-trade clause, which he recently used to veto a trade to the Houston Astros. Even if the Yankees showed interest, they would need his consent to facilitate any potential deal.

Yankees’ Focus Elsewhere

With Arenado no longer an option, the Yankees are expected to pursue alternative solutions to strengthen their infield. Finding a versatile player to enhance their roster remains a key focus, but it’s evident that Arenado will not factor into their plans for the 2025 season.
