Corbin Burnes is gearing up for his first season with the Arizona Diamondbacks after signing a six-year, $210 million contract. Meanwhile, this move has created a dilemma for the Baltimore Orioles.
The Orioles’ only significant free-agent pitching addition so far has been Tomoyuki Sugano, a 35-year-old veteran from Japanese baseball who is not considered an MLB ace. Their current rotation includes Grayson Rodriguez, Zach Eflin, Dean Kremer, and Albert Suarez. However, Kyle Bradish and Tyler Wells are likely to miss most, if not all, of the 2025 season due to elbow surgeries.
To bolster their pitching, the Orioles could explore free agency or pursue a trade. Among free-agent options, former Oriole Jack Flaherty is a notable second-tier candidate. On the trade front, the team has been linked to Seattle Mariners right-hander Luis Castillo, with MLB Trade Rumors listing Baltimore as a “best fit” for him.
The Mariners need infield help, and the Orioles have an abundance of infield talent across their organization. A potential trade package could involve Ryan Mountcastle, a corner infielder better suited for first base, along with a pitching prospect like Cade Povich. Given Baltimore’s deep farm system, crafting an appealing offer shouldn’t be difficult, but Seattle would likely require a Major League-ready infielder in any deal.
Castillo would be a valuable addition for Baltimore. The three-time All-Star is under contract through 2027, earning about $24 million annually, with a $25 million vesting option for 2028. Despite a career 73-76 record, he has a strong 3.56 ERA and averages nearly 10 strikeouts per nine innings.
However, any trade hinges on Castillo’s approval, as his contract includes a no-trade clause. If the Orioles can negotiate a deal and gain Castillo’s consent, it could significantly strengthen their rotation while addressing Seattle’s needs, benefiting both teams in the upcoming season.
