After missing out on Corbin Burnes, the San Francisco Giants are now eyeing San Diego Padres ace Dylan Cease as their next big pitching acquisition. According to FanSided’s Christopher Kline, Cease is a prime target for the Giants, who are looking to bolster their rotation after the Burnes pursuit fell through. Cease is projected to sign a $108 million contract next offseason, and with the Padres reportedly willing to trade him before he hits free agency, the Giants could be in a strong position to acquire him, particularly given their financial flexibility.
While the Padres are reportedly eager to move Cease, there’s uncertainty about whether they’d be willing to deal him to a division rival like San Francisco. Despite this, if the Giants can offer a compelling return package, the Padres may be forced to listen. San Francisco’s financial outlook could also give them confidence in extending Cease long-term, even if it means a bidding war during free agency.
Adding Cease would provide the Giants with a significant boost, potentially giving them an edge over both the Padres and the Arizona Diamondbacks, although all three teams still face the challenge of closing the gap with the dominant Los Angeles Dodgers.
