After signing with Auburn, earning a spot in the Under Armour All-American Game was a significant milestone for 247Sports 5-star defensive end Jared Smith.
At Sunday’s media day, the 6-foot-6, 240-pound standout expressed his excitement about being in Orlando and shared his enthusiasm for his future with the Tigers. Smith identified his greatest strength as a player:
“Causing havoc off the edge, that’s what I feel like is my specialty,” Smith said confidently. “That’s what (Auburn defensive line) coach Vontrell (King-Williams) and I talk about all the time—just getting after the quarterback at all levels. I think I showed that this season.”
According to MaxPreps, Smith recorded 89 tackles, 22 tackles for loss, and 10.5 sacks for Thompson High School in Alabaster, Alabama. His impact was instrumental in the team’s Alabama 7A state championship win.
Looking ahead, Smith was clear about where he wanted to improve.
“Man, just really staying low; pad level. Pad level is going to be key. Striking the man in front of me,” he said.
Smith also acknowledged that competing in the SEC would demand a heightened level of preparation off the field.
“Going to Auburn and watching film, it’s going to be on a whole different level,” he noted.
One aspect of his game that might surprise fans is his versatility in pass coverage.
“I can drop into coverage,” Smith said with a smile. “Because Thompson used me dropping into coverage, disguising defenses. So yeah, I can drop into coverage.”
Auburn On SI will continue to follow Smith and other Auburn recruits during practices and the Jan. 2 Under Armour All-America Game, which will air on ESPN at 4 p.m. EST.
