Last month, the San Diego Padres signed Moisés Gómez to a minor league contract, as noted in the MLB.com transaction log. The 26-year-old corner outfielder, previously with the St. Louis Cardinals, was outrighted and released last season.
Gómez is striving for his MLB debut after a promising 2022 minor league season where he hit 39 home runs, earning a spot on the Cardinals’ 40-man roster. Despite his power, he spent the entire 2023 season in Triple-A, hitting .232 with 30 homers but posting a .293 on-base percentage. Those numbers weren’t enough to secure an MLB call-up, and the Cardinals outrighted him off the roster last February.
Starting 2023 in Triple-A again, Gómez struggled, batting just .208 with three home runs in 45 games before being released. He finished the season in the independent American Association but has shown signs of resurgence in Venezuelan winter ball, slashing .273/.396/.613 with 15 home runs in 48 games.
The Padres are offering Gómez a chance to turn things around after two challenging seasons. Known for his significant power—127 home runs across nine minor league seasons with the Tampa Bay and St. Louis organizations—Gómez has demonstrated his ability to hit, particularly in Triple-A, where he’s slugged 49 homers in under 1,000 plate appearances. However, his career .236/.303/.452 line at that level and a strikeout rate nearing 33% highlight areas for improvement.
