Paul Goldschmidt is set to play for his third MLB team this season, transitioning from the St. Louis Cardinals’ red to the iconic New York Yankees pinstripes—a sight that may take some getting used to. Goldschmidt began his career with the Arizona Diamondbacks but truly rose to stardom with the Cardinals, earning an MVP award, several Gold Gloves, and a Silver Slugger over six successful seasons.
After leaving St. Louis via free agency, Goldschmidt signed a one-year deal with the Yankees. Before departing, he expressed his gratitude to Cardinals fans in a heartfelt newspaper ad on Sunday. The message read:
“Thank you, Cards Nation!
Thank you for accepting me as one of your own. Thank you for the cheers. Thank you for sticking with me through the ups and downs.
Most importantly, thank you for the relationships and memories, which will stick with me for a lifetime! It was an honor to wear the Cardinals uniform and do my best to carry on the tradition built by so many before me.”
The full-page ad reflected the class and professionalism Goldschmidt displayed during his tenure with St. Louis.
Now with the Yankees, Goldschmidt joins a team fresh off its first World Series appearance in 15 years. Despite losing Juan Soto in free agency, the Yankees hope Goldschmidt will provide stability at first base—a position that has seen frequent turnover recently.
Meanwhile, the Cardinals have missed the playoffs for two consecutive seasons and appear to be retooling. With Goldschmidt gone and Nolan Arenado’s future with the team uncertain—though increasingly likely to remain—the franchise faces pivotal decisions moving forward.
