BREAKING NEWS: The Hokies Lands Chris Marve Replacement

Virginia Tech head coach Brent Pry has announced the hiring of a new coordinator, bringing a wealth of experience from both the NFL and all three divisions of college football: FBS, FCS, and Division III.

“It’s an honor to join the Virginia Tech family,” Siefkes said. “This program has a storied defensive tradition, and I’m excited to work with Coach Pry and our talented student-athletes to build on this legacy. I look forward to creating a defense that embodies the lunch pail mentality of the past. The energy, passion, and commitment here are unmatched, and I’m ready to get to work.”

Siefkes joins Virginia Tech after two seasons as linebackers coach for the Arizona Cardinals. During his tenure, he helped mentor linebacker Kyzir White, who ranked 15th in the NFL with 137 tackles in 2024, and safety Budda Baker, who earned Pro Bowl honors and recorded 164 tackles, the second most in the NFL. Under Siefkes’ guidance, the Cardinals’ defense excelled in several key areas during the 2024 season, including:

  • 6th in Opponent Second Half Points Per Game
  • 8th in Opponent Red Zone Scoring Percentage
  • 10th in Opponent Offensive Touchdowns
  • 11th in Opponent Yards Per Completion
  • 12th in DVOA (Defense-Adjusted Value Over Average)
  • 14th in Opponent Offensive Points Per Game

Arizona Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon praised Siefkes, calling him a “remarkable leader” and a “fantastic communicator and teacher.” Gannon added, “He has unbelievable knowledge on how to stop offenses. Hokie Nation, be ready to see an aggressive, smart, tough unit that will dominate games.”

Coach Pry expressed enthusiasm for Siefkes’ hiring, highlighting his reputation and coaching pedigree. “After a lengthy and thorough search, one name kept emerging—Sam Siefkes,” Pry said. “People across the country couldn’t stop praising Sam’s knowledge and coaching abilities, and I couldn’t agree more. He’s worked with some of the best minds in the game, including Mike Zimmer, Kevin O’Connell, Ed Donatell, Jonathan Gannon, Nick Rallis, and Dave Aranda. His innovative defensive schemes will energize our players and fans alike.”

Pry emphasized Siefkes’ proven ability to excel across all levels of football. “From building top-ranked defenses in college football to working with elite NFL athletes, he knows how to get the most out of his players. He’s a teacher at heart, and I’m confident his leadership will resonate with our student-athletes.”

Siefkes’ hiring will become official following the completion of the University’s standard employment process.
