BREAKING NEWS: The Hokies Lands New Coach

Virginia Tech land new coordinator following his two-year stint as the linebackers coach for the Arizona Cardinals. Siefkes replaces Chris Marve, who was dismissed after the Hokies’ 6-6 regular season and a 24-10 loss to Minnesota in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl.

“Sam’s ability to adapt and thrive at every level is what sets him apart,” said Virginia Tech head coach Brent Pry in a statement. “From building top-tier college defenses to coaching elite NFL athletes, he knows how to maximize player potential. He’s a natural teacher, and I’m confident his leadership will resonate with our student-athletes.”

Siefkes brings a diverse coaching background, though much of his college experience has been at lower levels. He served as the defensive coordinator at Wofford, an FCS program, from 2018 to 2020, following a two-year stint in the same role at Division III Wisconsin-Platteville. His NFL experience began with the Minnesota Vikings, where he worked as a defensive quality control coach in 2021 and an assistant linebackers coach in 2022, before joining the Cardinals.

Earlier in his career, Siefkes was a quality control coach at Florida International in 2014 and began as a student assistant at Division III Wisconsin-La Crosse from 2012 to 2013.

Siefkes expressed enthusiasm for the opportunity. “This program has a rich defensive tradition, and I’m thrilled to work alongside Coach Pry and our talented players to build on that legacy,” he said. “I aim to create a defense that reflects the lunch pail mentality of this program’s past. The energy and passion here are unparalleled, and I’m ready to get started.”

The Hokies are counting on Siefkes to revitalize a defense that fell short under Marve’s leadership during his three seasons in Blacksburg.
