After nearly two months without a defensive coordinator, Virginia Tech football has filled the position with a coach who brings NFL experience. The Hokies have hired Arizona Cardinals linebackers coach Sam Siefkes to lead the defense.
Head coach Brent Pry spoke about Siefkes’ qualifications on Tuesday, emphasizing the improvements he expects him to bring to the unit.
“I’m not just open to it, I’m excited about it,” Pry said when asked about potential changes to the defensive scheme under Siefkes. “It involves us over the next several weeks sitting down, watching film, watching cut-ups, having discussions about what’s good that we’ve done that we want to keep.”
Pry revealed that 10 serious candidates were considered, but Siefkes stood out throughout the interview process.
“He had a path similar to my own,” Pry said, highlighting Siefkes’ football IQ and consistency. “The NFL experience to me, they’re doing it at the highest level—the game planning, the play calling, the situational defenses. The guys that he was around [are] some of the best at the highest level. I felt very confident in it. As you spend time and you learn more, that needle just kept moving for Sam.”
Virginia Tech’s Spring Game is set for April 12 at 3 p.m. at Lane Stadium.
