This offseason, Georgia football has made significant strides in improving their roster through the transfer portal, adding two starting wide receivers and bolstering their secondary with talented players.
With February approaching, transfer portal talk will quiet down until after spring practice, but there was one more target that Georgia had its eyes on: Ohio State defensive lineman Hero Kanu.
Kanu has spent the last two seasons at Ohio State, recording 14 tackles and one sack. While those numbers may not stand out, Kanu is a highly skilled player who was a four-star prospect coming out of high school. Georgia and head coach Kirby Smart hosted Kanu on a visit to Athens on Tuesday, and it was expected that he would make his commitment soon after.

Kanu is heading to Texas
According to Hayes Fawcett of On3, Hero Kanu officially announced his commitment to Texas on Wednesday morning.
While it’s disappointing to lose any recruiting battle, especially to an SEC program that Georgia will be facing in the future, this particular loss isn’t a major setback. First off, Kanu hasn’t yet proven himself at the collegiate level. While he certainly has potential, it’s unlikely that he’ll have a significant immediate impact at his new school.
Additionally, Georgia still has time to add more transfer players if Kirby Smart and his staff decide to pursue that route. While there likely won’t be any immediate moves, Georgia will once again be active in the transfer portal after spring practice this year.
So while it would’ve been great to win this recruitment, there’s no need to panic over the loss. If Georgia still wants to add a defensive lineman transfer later this year, they can. And if they choose not to, Georgia has a strong track record of developing talent at this position, so they likely already have elite players ready to step up.
