HUGE BOOST: Vikings Confirms To Re-Sign prized $42 Million Elite Star

The Minnesota Vikings are working to secure one of their key pending free agents, as they approach an offseason with over 20 players set to hit free agency. The Vikings tied for the most top-100 eligible free agents according to Pro Football Focus (PFF), with seven free agents among the league’s best. However, the Vikings are determined not to let Bynum, who ranks as the No. 3 free-agent safety and No. 31 overall, leave.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported on January 29 that the Vikings and Bynum have discussed a potential extension. While no deal has been finalized yet, both sides remain open to an agreement, with a resolution expected before mid-March. PFF projects Bynum to receive a three-year deal worth $42 million.

A fourth-round pick in 2021, Bynum has thrived in defensive coordinator Brian Flores’ system. Known for his ability to learn and adapt—having converted from a college cornerback—Bynum has been a standout performer. Over the past two seasons, he has totaled 233 tackles, 5 interceptions, and 12 pass breakups. Bynum is described as an interchangeable safety, capable of producing in various defensive schemes. ESPN’s Matt Bowen highlighted his ability to cover deep routes while also being effective against the run.

The Vikings’ decision to invest in Bynum could be influenced by the future of veteran safety Harrison Smith, who is also up for free agency. At 35 years old, Smith is contemplating retirement for the second consecutive offseason. The futures of other key members of the Vikings’ secondary, including starting cornerbacks Byron Murphy Jr., Stephon Gilmore, and Shaq Barrett, as well as backup Fabian Moreau, are also uncertain as they approach free agency.
