BREAKING NEWS: Notre Dame Lands New Coach

Notre Dame football had an impressive postseason run, reaching the national championship but ultimately falling to Ohio State. When a team makes it that far, coaching changes are common since successful coordinators often attract new opportunities. The Fighting Irish saw defensive coordinator Al Golden leave for the NFL and are now bringing in Chris Ash as his replacement.

Pete Thamel reported that Chris Ash has agreed to become Notre Dame’s new defensive coordinator. He brings a combination of coordinating experience, NFL background, and a strong track record at the college level. The deal is expected to be finalized soon.

Notre Dame’s defense was among the best in college football this season, making Al Golden a highly sought-after coach once the season ended. Since many college coaches aspire to reach the NFL, it’s no surprise that Golden seized the opportunity to join the Cincinnati Bengals’ staff.

Chris Ash previously served as the defensive coordinator at Texas in 2020. Most recently, he worked as a scout for the Jacksonville Jaguars during the 2024 season.

Ash brings a wealth of experience to the Notre Dame football program, having worked in both college and the NFL in a variety of roles. From head coach to scout, he has gained valuable insight at multiple levels of the game.

Ash has spent the majority of his career in college football, beginning as a graduate assistant at Drake in 1997. After just one year, he was promoted to defensive coordinator. Over the years, Ash has gained experience at various institutions and organizations, including Iowa State, San Diego State, Wisconsin, Arkansas, Ohio State, Rutgers, Texas, the Jaguars, and the Las Vegas Raiders.

Ash served as the head coach of the Rutgers football team from 2016 to 2019. When he took over, the Scarlet Knights were in a difficult position, and his tenure saw limited success, with records of 2-10, 4-8, 1-11, and a 1-3 start in 2019 before he was dismissed.

Throughout his career, Chris Ash has primarily served as a defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach. With his strong defensive background, he brings a wealth of experience to the Notre Dame football team.
