Minnesota Vikings left tackle Cam Robinson could be credited with saving the team’s season, but he’s likely to move on next year. Robinson was acquired at the NFL trade deadline in exchange for a conditional fifth-round pick after starting left tackle Christian Darrisaw suffered a season-ending knee injury in Week 8. Robinson stepped in and helped stabilize the Vikings, who had been struggling after the Week 6 bye with back-to-back losses to the Detroit Lions and Los Angeles Rams.
However, Robinson’s strong performance has likely positioned him for a lucrative contract elsewhere. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported on Jan. 29 that Robinson is a name to watch in free agency, with the Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Rams among the teams potentially interested in his services. Fowler noted that Robinson could secure a deal exceeding $20 million per year. The Vikings, who traded for Robinson midseason, are also still vying to retain him, but the team may be hesitant to pay him big money given they signed Darrisaw to a four-year, $104 million deal in July.
Darrisaw, recovering from a torn ACL and MCL, might not be ready for the start of the season, which could make bringing Robinson back as a one-year insurance option appealing. However, Robinson’s expected market, with Pro Football Focus projecting him for a three-year, $56 million deal, makes it difficult to see him staying in Minnesota.
