Former New York Giants quarterback and current Minnesota Vikings signal-caller could attract significant interest if he enters free agency. While his tenure with the Giants had its ups and downs, finding a quarterback with promise is no easy feat in the NFL. Jones brings ample starting experience and appears eager to keep improving.
Now, speculation suggests that Jones may depart from the Vikings to take over for a quarterback who has not only reached the Super Bowl but also won it.
Former Giants and Current Vikings QB Daniel Jones Landing Spots
NFL analyst Cody Benjamin of CBS Sports recently published a feature on January 28, outlining potential quarterback trades for the offseason. With the 2025 NFL Draft class lacking elite quarterback prospects, veteran signal-callers could be in higher demand than usual.
“Several high-profile starters are on track to become free agents in March, and a number of others could also be available via trade,” Benjamin noted in his analysis.
He matched 17 veteran quarterbacks with potential teams, ranging from major blockbuster deals to backup reshuffles.
For Daniel Jones, Benjamin suggests a move to the Los Angeles Rams as a potential successor to Super Bowl-winning quarterback Matthew Stafford. While the idea might seem surprising, Benjamin explains the logic behind it.
“Matthew Stafford is the unquestioned starter if he returns, but he’s soon to be 37,” Benjamin wrote. “It’s time Sean McVay gets a younger arm to develop, and he’s embraced reclamation projects before (i.e. Baker Mayfield).”
The idea is that Jones could step in when Stafford’s time in L.A. comes to an end. However, Stafford, who turns 37 in February, has no immediate plans to retire. According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, Stafford intends to play in 2025, though a new contract deal may need to be worked out.
Following the Rams’ playoff loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, Stafford told reporters he would “take some time to think about” retirement but didn’t seem ready to step away from the game. When asked if he had more football left in him, he confidently responded, “Sure feels like it.”
Stafford’s current contract with the Rams carries a cap hit of $49.66 million after being restructured last summer.
New Quarterback for New York
In his feature on blockbuster offseason trades, Cody Benjamin also explored potential quarterback options for the New York Giants, a team in clear need of a franchise signal-caller for the upcoming season.
Benjamin’s choice? Russell Wilson of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
“The G-Men reportedly had eyes on Wilson before the former Super Bowl champion signed with Pittsburgh, and now that Daniel Jones is gone, they could use his veteran arm again,” Benjamin explained.
He also noted that the Giants might find themselves in a tough spot if the Las Vegas Raiders trade up for a top rookie quarterback, potentially forcing New York into desperation mode.
