BREAKING NEWS: The Giants Land New Coach

According to Jordan Schultz, the New York Giants have hired assistant secondary/cornerbacks coach. He will work alongside newly appointed defensive backs coach Marquand Manuel.

Burris has limited NFL coaching experience, having spent just one stint in the league as the Miami Dolphins’ assistant defensive backs coach from 2013 to 2015 under Joe Philbin. Notably, this overlapped with Giants general manager Joe Schoen, who was Miami’s assistant director of college scouting in 2013 before being promoted to director of player personnel from 2014 to 2016.

Most of Burris’ coaching career has been at the collegiate level. He recently served as the co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach at Louisiana Tech. Before that, he was Louisiana’s cornerbacks coach from 2021 to 2023 and previously held the same role at Louisiana Tech from 2018 to 2020.

He also spent time in the Power Five, working as a defensive analyst for Notre Dame—his alma mater—in 2016. A consensus first-team All-American during his college playing days, Burris was selected in the first round of the 1994 NFL Draft by the Buffalo Bills, where he played through his rookie contract. He later spent four seasons with the Indianapolis Colts and two with the Cincinnati Bengals before finishing his career on the New England Patriots’ practice squad in 2004.

Over his playing career, Burris recorded 19 interceptions—two of which were returned for touchdowns—and 536 tackles. As a coach, he has mentored notable defensive backs, including L’Jarius Sneed and Amik Robertson at Louisiana Tech, both of whom have outperformed their fourth-round draft status.
