The New York Giants’ leadership is running out of time to get things right. Their decision to extend quarterback Daniel Jones with a $160 million contract instead of securing running back Saquon Barkley on a long-term deal has backfired. Now, Barkley is thriving with the Philadelphia Eagles, helping lead them to their second Super Bowl in three years, while Jones is set to hit free agency after being cut midway through his first season under the new deal.
The Giants have attempted to course-correct by drafting star wide receiver Malik Nabers with the No. 6 overall pick last year. Now, with the third overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, they have a prime opportunity to secure a franchise quarterback. However, landing either Cam Ward (Miami) or Shedeur Sanders (Colorado) isn’t guaranteed, as both the Tennessee Titans (No. 1) and Cleveland Browns (No. 2) are also in need of long-term solutions at quarterback.
The pressure is on for general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll, as their jobs may depend on getting this quarterback decision right. They must weigh their draft options against potential free-agent acquisitions, all while ensuring Nabers has a capable leader under center. The young receiver made his preference clear on Wednesday, Feb. 5, stating that he wants a veteran presence in the QB room to help guide a potential rookie.
“I would want to have a vet in there,” Nabers told Pro Football Talk Live. “If we decide to pick a rookie, in my eye I would want a vet to be in that same room with that rookie teaching him some stuff so when he’s out there, he’s not just out there in his head [thinking] he has to be the savior of this team. That’s a lot to put on a rookie.”
Nabers’ stance makes sense and could influence the Giants’ approach. Bringing in an experienced quarterback like Justin Fields or Kirk Cousins on a one-year deal could help ease a rookie’s transition and provide the team with additional flexibility. While such a move could spark a quarterback controversy, it may be the best path forward for a franchise that can’t afford another costly mistake.
