The New York Knicks’ G-League affiliate in Westchester lost a player to another NBA team following Thursday’s trade deadline. According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, Chuma Okeke has signed a 10-day contract with the Philadelphia 76ers.
Knicks’ G-League standout Chuma Okeke signs with the 76ers
Chuma Okeke, 26, initially signed a non-guaranteed deal with the Knicks before training camp but never played in an NBA game for them. Instead, he spent most of the season in the G-League, where he averaged 17.3 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 4.9 assists over 16 games.
The 6-foot-6 forward brings four years of NBA experience, all with the Orlando Magic. In 189 career games (including 55 starts), he has averaged 6.3 points and 3.7 rebounds per game. Now, he gets a fresh opportunity with the Philadelphia 76ers on a 10-day contract.
Okeke could find a role with the 76ers
The Knicks didn’t have much room to integrate Chuma Okeke into their rotation. Landry Shamet has been filling the backup wing role in recent weeks, while head coach Tom Thibodeau has remained committed to a tight nine-man rotation.
For the 76ers, Okeke provides a veteran wing presence that could prove valuable. Philadelphia has dealt with injuries this season and recently traded away Caleb Martin and KJ Martin, opening up an opportunity for Okeke to carve out a larger role.
Meanwhile, the Knicks remained relatively quiet at the trade deadline, making only one move—sending Jericho Sims to the Milwaukee Bucks in exchange for Delon Wright as part of a multi-team deal involving Khris Middleton and Kyle Kuzma.
