The Cincinnati Reds have officially signed right-handed reliever Albert Abreu. While reports last week indicated an agreement was in place, the deal is now finalized.
Abreu returns to Major League Baseball for the 2025 season after spending 2024 pitching in Japan, where he posted a 2.39 ERA with 33 strikeouts and 20 walks (including three intentional) over 49.0 innings across 52 games. However, that ERA, while solid, was slightly inflated by Japan’s pitcher-friendly environment, where the league average ERA was 3.04.
Before his stint in Japan, Abreu pitched in the majors from 2020-2023 with the Royals, Rangers, and Yankees. Over four seasons, he logged 135.2 innings with a 4.58 ERA, 136 strikeouts, and 78 walks.
Cincinnati has invited Abreu to big league spring training, bringing their camp roster to 59 players, including 31 pitchers. Of those, 11 are non-roster invitees. Veteran left-hander Wade Miley, recovering from Tommy John surgery, won’t be ready for the start of the season but is expected back around May. Additionally, Julian Aguiar and Brandon Williamson, both on the 40-man roster, will miss all of 2025 as they recover from Tommy John surgery.
While pitchers and catchers are not officially due to report to Goodyear until next week, some players have already arrived at the facility to begin early preparations.
