BREAKING NEWS: Vikings Makes Another Groundbreaking Announcement Involving J.J. McCarthy

The Minnesota Vikings’ 2024 season was salvaged by their early free agency signing of Sam Darnold, who stepped up following J.J. McCarthy’s season-ending injury. Darnold’s breakout campaign helped lead Minnesota to the playoffs and sparked debate over the team’s starting quarterback for 2025.

McCarthy, the 10th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, suffered a torn meniscus in his first preseason game and underwent a full repair, sidelining him for the entire season. This gave Darnold an extended opportunity, and he delivered, finishing with 4,319 passing yards and 35 touchdowns—ranking fourth in the NFL in both categories.

However, a late-season collapse, including a poor performance in Week 18 against the Detroit Lions and a Wild Card loss to the Los Angeles Rams, changed the conversation. While Darnold was once expected to command a multi-year contract worth over $40 million annually, projections now estimate his market value closer to $35 million per year.

McCarthy’s recovery also factors into the Vikings’ decision. After undergoing a follow-up knee procedure in November to address swelling, the rookie is expected to resume football drills soon and should be ready for OTAs in May.

J.J. McCarthy Hopes for 'Fair Opportunity' to Earn Vikings Starting Job

If Darnold’s price rises beyond Minnesota’s budget, the team is likely to target a veteran quarterback. Daniel Jones, who finished the 2024 season with the Vikings, is considered a top option, though he could also attract interest from other teams.

Regardless of who Minnesota adds, head coach Kevin O’Connell’s system and the offensive trio of Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, and T.J. Hockenson make this an appealing destination for free-agent quarterbacks. Even with a veteran addition, McCarthy remains the frontrunner to start in 2025.
