The Cleveland Guardians made a noteworthy move over the weekend by signing undrafted infielder to a minor league contract.
While these types of deals are often long shots, they come with little risk. The 23-year-old now has an opportunity to develop within the Guardians’ system.
The Cleveland Guardians have signed 23-year-old infielder Michael Hallquist to a minor league contract for the 2025 season.
Hallquist went undrafted out of Ball State and spent the 2024 season playing in 34 games for the Fargo Redhawks of the American Association. The news was shared by Guardians Prospective on X.
Hallquist still has an opportunity to climb the ranks in the Guardians’ system if he proves he can compete against professional pitching.
In 2024, he put up impressive numbers at Ball State, slashing .331/.396/.674 with 21 home runs and a 1.069 OPS over 273 plate appearances. He also added six stolen bases.
Despite his strong performance, he went undrafted in the 2024 MLB Draft and later signed with the Fargo Redhawks of the independent American Association.
With the Fargo Redhawks, Hallquist posted a .775 OPS across 135 plate appearances, adding two home runs, eight doubles, and six stolen bases.
Defensively, he has the versatility to play second base, shortstop, and third base. While the Guardians have strong organizational depth at those positions, they are giving him time to develop without immediate pressure.
The odds may be against him, but baseball has seen plenty of underdog success stories. If Hallquist stays healthy and continues to put in the work, he’ll have a shot at chasing his MLB dream.
