Arthur Kaliyev was claimed off waivers by the New York Rangers a few weeks ago. Though he has spent some time as a healthy scratch, the Uzbekistan-born forward has found some success with his new team. While he remains on the fringes of the Rangers’ lineup, he has already made an impact in his brief tenure. However, the team hopes to get more out of the former first-round prospect who slipped to the second round with the Los Angeles Kings.
In 11 games with the Rangers, Kaliyev has recorded three goals and one assist while wearing the iconic Blueshirt. He is battling for a regular spot in the lineup, but New York needs more from him if he wants to secure his place. The Rangers are looking for increased production from their bottom six, and Kaliyev is a prime example of a player who needs to step up.
Known for his dangerous shot, Kaliyev is expected to score more frequently than he has so far. With just 19 shots in his 11 games, he is converting at 15.8%, a rate well above his career average. The Rangers will be looking for him to generate more scoring opportunities by getting pucks on net more consistently.
If Kaliyev increases his shot volume, he will improve his chances of beating opposing goaltenders. Defensively, he has been solid—only J.T. Miller has a better expected goals against per 60 minutes. This defensive reliability has helped offset his offensive struggles, but the Rangers will be watching closely to see if he can elevate his game in the months ahead.
