Betts, a former second-round pick from the University of Iowa in 2002, previously spent four seasons coaching running backs at his alma mater. During his tenure, he mentored Kaleb Johnson, one of Iowa’s top running backs, who earned consensus All-American honors. Johnson set single-season program records in scoring (138 points), total touchdowns (23), and rushing touchdowns (21) while accumulating 1,537 rushing yards—the third-highest mark in school history. He was also named the Big Ten Ameche-Dayne Running Back of the Year.
Before returning to Iowa in 2021, Betts served as head coach at Pine Crest School in Fort Lauderdale, where he led the team to an undefeated season in 2020.
As a player, Betts enjoyed a nine-year NFL career, spending eight seasons with Washington before finishing with New Orleans. Over 111 games, he recorded 3,326 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns on 821 carries, along with 1,646 receiving yards and three touchdowns on 188 catches. His best season came in 2006 when he rushed for 1,154 yards and added 445 receiving yards. Additionally, he amassed over 2,000 yards as a kickoff returner, including a 94-yard touchdown in 2005.
At Iowa, Betts was the only running back in school history to lead the team in rushing for four straight seasons. He ranks second all-time in career rushing yards (3,686), fourth in all-purpose yards (4,397), and 19th in scoring (162).
A native of Blue Springs, Mo., Betts earned his bachelor’s degree from Iowa in 2001 and later completed the Business Management and Entrepreneurship Program through the Aresty Institute of Executive Education and The Wharton Sports Business Initiative.
